Freshkills Park

Themes
Adaptive Reuse, Design, Landscape, Sustainable, Urban
Location
Staten Island, NY

Many modes of transportation for this one. We took the ferry over to Staten Island, where Doug Elliott, who works for the Department of Parks and Recreation, picked us up and drove us in a van to Fresh Kills. Infamous for being the largest landfill in the world while it was open and for housing 9/11 rubble and remains, it has since closed permanently and is being transformed (design: Field Ops) into and rebranded as Freshkills Park. Once the 30-year plan is complete, it will be almost three times the size of Central Park. The view of Manhattan from the top is astonishing. Thanks to Doug and the NYC Urban Park Rangers for helping set this up.
