Marcel Breuer Guest House

Themes
Architecture, Art, Design, Design History, Interior, Landscape
Location
Pocantico, NY

On a beautiful fall day we took a tour of the Marcel Breuer Guest House, part of the Rockefeller Estate in Pocantico, NY, where the leaves had just peaked. Originally commissioned by MoMA in 1948 to launch the House in the Museum Garden series of architect-designed, modern, “affordable” model homes, the house was bought by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. after the exhibit, dismantled, transported and reassembled upstate for use as a guest house. It was recently given to the National Trust for Historic Preservation under stewardship of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, who are working to restore it to its original condition.

Deserved thanks go to Kimberly Miller, who was also kind enough to take us through Kykuit’s gardens and into the house to see the art collection as we sought respite from a sudden rainstorm. The enormous Picasso tapestries alone are worth making the trek up. Afterwards, we stopped by Union Church to see the Matisse rose window and Chagall’s astonishing stained glass windows.
